Sanwo-Olu to Lagos Youths: Step Up, Serve, and Secure the Nation

In a bold call to action, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged young people across the state to enlist in the Nigerian Army, describing military service as both a patriotic duty and a pathway to discipline, purpose, and national development. The governor made the appeal during a recent address at the Nigerian Army's recruitment drive in Lagos, emphasizing the urgent need for youth involvement in strengthening Nigeria's security architecture.

Speaking at the event, Sanwo-Olu highlighted the pivotal role youths must play in safeguarding the country’s future, noting that beyond white-collar ambitions lies a higher calling—service to the nation.

"We need more young men and women from Lagos to rise to the occasion. The military is not just about combat; it’s about courage, responsibility, and nation-building," the governor stated.

He noted that many of today’s leaders and influencers began their journey through public service, urging youths to see enlistment not just as a job, but as a platform for leadership and national impact.

Sanwo-Olu acknowledged widespread skepticism among young Nigerians about joining the armed forces, citing fears over insecurity and perceived lack of opportunities. He, however, countered this narrative, stressing that the military offers structured career growth, specialized training, and a chance to serve with honor.

“There’s dignity in military service. There’s pride in defending your country and protecting its people. We must rewrite the story and inspire our youth to see the Army as a noble career path,” he said.

The call comes amid rising concerns over youth unemployment and national insecurity. With millions of young Nigerians seeking meaningful engagement, the Nigerian Army continues to conduct recruitment drives to fill various positions across the country.

Security experts believe increased youth enlistment could help bridge the manpower gap in the armed forces, particularly in counterinsurgency operations and community-based security interventions.

By joining the Army, Sanwo-Olu said, Lagos youths can be part of the solution to Nigeria’s security challenges, rather than bystanders in a system they often criticize.

The governor’s message was echoed by traditional and community leaders present at the event. They praised the move as timely, saying it would not only boost national security but also reduce youth idleness and crime.

“Lagos has always produced brave sons and daughters,” one community chief remarked. “It’s time we return to that legacy of courage and service.”

As the Nigerian Army continues its recruitment exercise, Sanwo-Olu promised that the Lagos State Government will offer support to enlistees, including sensitization campaigns, transportation assistance, and morale-boosting incentives.

He challenged local government councils, community development associations, and youth organizations to mobilize and encourage willing candidates to take the opportunity seriously.

In a time when many young Nigerians are seeking purpose and direction, Sanwo-Olu’s rallying cry offers a different kind of opportunity—a chance to serve, to protect, and to lead. Whether through boots on the ground or minds sharpened by discipline, the governor believes the future of Nigeria lies in the hands of courageous young citizens willing to take the first step.
