Dr. George Nwaeke, the recently resigned Head of the Rivers State Civil Service, has leveled explosive allegations against suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, accusing him of orchestrating the bombing of the Rivers State House of Assembly in 2023 to prevent a looming impeachment.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, Nwaeke alleged that the governor, in a desperate bid to frustrate lawmakers loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, ordered the arson attack on the Assembly complex located along Moscow Road in Port Harcourt. According to him, the mission was executed by the then Assembly Leader and now Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie, acting on direct instructions from Fubara.
“I was physically present when a bag of money was handed to Edison for that operation. Though I can’t say how much was in it, the intent was clear. The plan was to burn down the Assembly to halt impeachment proceedings,” Nwaeke alleged.
He described the attack as part of a larger, well-orchestrated campaign of sabotage, noting that a second attempt was made to demolish the lawmakers’ residential quarters, which was only averted by timely intervention from concerned Rivers elders, youths, and National Assembly members.
“Governor Fubara later told me personally that had he known earlier, he would have brought down their hall too—this is the man who claims to lead the state with integrity,” Nwaeke said.
He painted a damning portrait of Fubara’s leadership, accusing him of wasteful destruction of public property and fostering a culture of political vengeance disguised as governance.
In a startling revelation, Nwaeke also claimed the governor had openly bragged about leveraging the Ijaw ethnic group’s influence and control over oil infrastructure to push for a presidential agenda in 2027, raising fears about ethnic manipulation and national security threats.
Despite growing speculation that he was forced out of office, Nwaeke insisted his resignation was voluntary. “I was not dismissed or pressured. I stepped down on my own terms, driven by conscience and concern for Rivers State,” he clarified.
In a swift and firm response, Governor Fubara issued a strongly worded statement dismissing the allegations as politically motivated fabrications.
“The truth is that Dr. Nwaeke has been compromised. His claims are not only false but orchestrated to fulfill promises made to his political paymasters. This is a calculated attempt to discredit my administration and derail the peace process facilitated by President Bola Tinubu,” Fubara stated.
Describing the claims as “laughable and malicious,” the governor urged Nigerians and Rivers residents to disregard Nwaeke’s assertions, reaffirming his commitment to peace, transparency, and responsible leadership.
The war of words between the former Head of Service and the embattled governor has further deepened the political tension in Rivers State, as citizens await clarity amidst conflicting narratives and rising stakes in the state's volatile political landscape.
