Renowned Nollywood actor and filmmaker Ibrahim Chatta has finally addressed the long-standing question on why he’s consistently overlooked by the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), despite his impressive body of work and massive fanbase.
Speaking during a candid conversation on the popular podcast hosted by skitmaker Isbae U, Chatta opened up about his indifference to awards and why his name is often absent from the AMVCA nominee list.
With calm confidence and a touch of humor, the actor, who also owns a thriving film village, made it clear that awards are not the yardstick by which he measures his success or creative fulfillment.
“I’ve never been interested in awards,” Chatta said. “Why should I be praying for what I’m not even interested in? If and when I choose to be interested, I’ll submit a film for consideration. But until then, I’m focused on my craft.”
He went on to acknowledge the curiosity surrounding his absence at major award ceremonies, noting that he has wondered why he’s not been invited, especially when he sees younger, less experienced actors receiving recognition.
“I’ve thought about it,” he admitted. “Why don’t they invite me? I see younger colleagues attending and winning. But honestly, do you know how many awards are sitting in my house already? Recognition is good, but it’s not everything.”
His composed and self-assured response has earned him admiration from fans and industry watchers alike. Many praised his humility and dedication to his art, rather than validation from accolades. Social media has since been flooded with goodwill messages, with supporters expressing hope that Chatta will one day receive the accolades he so richly deserves—whether he seeks them or not.
Ibrahim Chatta, known for his powerful performances in Yoruba-language cinema and beyond, continues to win hearts with his authenticity, work ethic, and refusal to conform to industry expectations. Whether or not the AMVCA comes calling, one thing remains certain: Chatta's legacy in Nollywood is already well cemented.
