Award-winning Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele, has opened up about her foray into politics, expressing gratitude for the experience despite its challenges and outcomes.
The "Jenifa’s Diary" star, who made headlines in 2022 when she was announced as the Deputy Governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, recently reflected on her political journey during a candid interview. Though the election did not end in victory, Akindele says she harbors no regrets.
“I’m glad I went into politics. It was a bold move, and I learnt a lot from it,” she stated. “It opened my eyes to the realities of leadership, service, and the deep issues affecting our society at the grassroots level.”
According to Akindele, stepping into the political space gave her a new perspective on the importance of civic engagement and the power of using one’s platform for real change. She acknowledged that while it was a major shift from entertainment, it was a necessary one.
“Politics challenged me in a way that no film role ever has. It took me out of my comfort zone and pushed me to connect directly with people—from market women to community youth leaders,” she added.

“It’s not just about winning an election; it’s about learning, growing, and staying committed to the people. I saw firsthand what needs to change, and I’ll continue to lend my voice to those conversations.”
