In a coordinated operation that underscores the growing synergy between security agencies in the war against drug trafficking, operatives of the Ogun State Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun, have apprehended a key suspect alleged to be deeply entrenched in the region’s illicit drug trade.
The suspect, 35-year-old Obi Emmanuel, was arrested in the heart of the bustling Ayetoro market in Yewa North Local Government Area on Thursday, May 8, 2025, following actionable intelligence provided by the Ogun State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
In an official statement issued by the Director of Intelligence and Investigation of Amotekun, retired Chief Superintendent of Police Shodeke Sholanke, the arrest was described as a "significant breakthrough" in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and abuse in Ogun State.
According to the statement, Emmanuel had allegedly been running a covert drug operation in the region and was linked to the distribution of hard drugs valued in the millions of Naira. He reportedly operated through a network of couriers, including a commercial driver identified only as “Alausa,” who was arrested by NDLEA operatives a day prior to Emmanuel’s apprehension.
The NDLEA had earlier intercepted an 18-seater commercial Mazda bus traveling along the Abeokuta–Ayetoro road. Upon interrogation, the driver, now in NDLEA custody, confessed that the consignment of illicit substances in the vehicle belonged to Emmanuel. This revelation triggered swift and coordinated action between the NDLEA and Amotekun, resulting in the suspect’s arrest just outside a chemist shop around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
“The arrest of Mr. Obi Emmanuel represents a major milestone in our collaborative efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks in Ogun State,” the Amotekun spokesperson stated. “This operation is a clear demonstration of our commitment to eradicating drug-related crimes and safeguarding our communities.”
The agency also reaffirmed its readiness to deepen collaboration with federal law enforcement bodies, including the NDLEA, in flushing out drug syndicates and restoring public safety across the state.
As investigations continue, authorities are optimistic that more arrests and revelations will follow, paving the way for stronger deterrence and legal action against those fueling the illegal drug trade in Ogun and its environs.
