Seven Injured in Lagos as Reckless Overtaking Sparks Multi-Vehicle Crash

A serious road accident involving two commercial buses and a Lexus 330 SUV with registration number KSF 879 JR left at least seven passengers injured yesterday at Lejina, inward Adamo, along the busy Sabo-Itokin Expressway in Lagos State.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of the Lexus Jeep, who fled the scene immediately after the crash, attempted a dangerous overtaking maneuver. While trying to overtake, he reportedly spotted an oncoming truck and, in a frantic bid to swerve back into his lane, lost control of the vehicle and rammed into two fully loaded commercial buses.

The impact of the collision caused significant damage and chaos, prompting a swift response from LASTMA officials and security personnel from the Area ‘N’ Police Division. Together, they quickly secured the scene, controlled the resulting traffic congestion, and ensured the wrecked vehicles were removed from the road to restore the flow of traffic.

Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department at LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed that all injured passengers were immediately rushed to the General Hospital in Ikorodu by the Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS) for urgent medical attention.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed his deep concern and sympathy for the victims, wishing them a speedy recovery. He also used the incident as a cautionary reminder to motorists about the dangers of reckless driving, particularly when overtaking on busy highways.

“Motorists must exercise patience and ensure that the road ahead is completely clear before attempting to overtake,” Bakare-Oki stated. “Reckless overtaking not only endangers the life of the driver but also those of innocent commuters. The government has put up road signs in strategic locations, and it’s crucial that drivers adhere to these warnings to maintain safety on our roads.”

This latest incident underscores the urgent need for heightened road discipline, especially on high-traffic routes where a single misjudgment can lead to tragedy. Authorities have urged anyone with information on the absconded Lexus driver to come forward as investigations continue.
